Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
