European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.

  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.
